The Xavante hunt for food and plant crops. Towards the end of a rainy season, a man cuts down 2 or 3 trees and leaves them to dry. He sets the trees on fire and the ashes add mineral nutrients to the soil. They plant crops that have minimal tending such as corn, beans and pumpkins.

XAVANTE

The culture that I was assigned to was Xavante. The "X" is pronounced as the letter "Z", so Xavante is pronounced as Zavan-tayy. I found them to be interesting because they live in Brazil, however are still living in the woods and refuse to adapt to the modern world. My family is from South America, (Guyana), which borders Brazil and Venezuela. I never knew that the Xavante existed and my blog will educate you with some knowledge about them.

Xavante Migrations and Diaspora

Approximately 9,600 Xavante people live in Mato Grasso, Brazil. Mato Grasso is forest like and not modernized. The Xavante are able to live as indigenous and do not have to change their way of living.

Neighbors of Xavante

Personally, I consider the Panará tribe as the neighbors of Xavante because they also reside in Mato Grasso, Brazil. Both tribes fit in with each other because they participate in mutual activities such as hunting and both speak the same language Ge or Je. Also, people in both cultures have a resemblence to one another. Both tribes are indegenous. There is not much information about the neighbors of the Xavante.

Birds of the Xavante

The top 5 birds spotted in the location that the Xavante live in (Mato Grosso, Brazil) are: Great Egret, Cattle Egret, Black Bellied Whistling duck, Wood Stork, and Snail Kite. The black bellied whistling duck can be spotted throughout the year along with the Wood Stork except for the month of January. The Cattle Egret was spotted March through November. The Great Egret was spotted throughout the whole year. The Snail Kite was spotted from February through November.Birds are important to the Xavante because they are part of their diet.

Xavante Cosmos

The Xavante are more concerned with changes or discovery. Xavante believe that the east, the beginning of the sky,had not been created yet. The north and the south were created afterwards, as well as the whites and their towns. More detailed origin myths tell about people becoming human after being like animals. The beliefs and ceremonies of the Xavante revolve around their reverence for life and fertility.(everyculture.com).
They believe that the stars are the eyes of heavenly people who are watching us from up above.
